Understanding the Supplemental Prospectus: Stay Informed, Stay Confident
When you invest in a unit trust, staying updated is key. That’s where a Supplemental Prospectus comes in.
When you invest in unit trusts, the information you rely on—such as the fund’s objectives, strategy, and fees—must be accurate, transparent, and up-to-date. But what happens when changes occur after the original Prospectus is issued?
That’s where the Supplemental Prospectus plays a crucial role.
What Is a Supplemental Prospectus?
A Supplemental Prospectus is an official document issued to update the original Prospectus or Master Prospectus. It is legally required when material changes are made to a fund—such as changes in fund name, investment strategy, risk factors, benchmarks, fees, or distribution policy.
Importantly, it does not replace the original Prospectus. Instead, it is meant to be read together with it. Think of it as an addendum—a necessary companion that ensures you’re working with the most current version of the fund’s information.
By law and regulatory practice, this document is provided by fund houses to ensure full transparency and investor protection.
What’s Inside a Supplemental Prospectus?
Let’s break down the common updates you might find in a Supplemental Prospectus—using examples from Hong Leong Asset Management’s actual disclosures:
1. Fund Name or Classification Updates
Funds are sometimes rebranded or restructured to better reflect their investment focus or geographic exposure. This helps investors clearly understand what they’re buying into.

In the 3rd Supplemental to the Hong Leong Master Prospectus, the "Hong Leong SEA-5 Equity Fund” was renamed to "ASEAN-5 Equity Fund”, to better reflect its geographical investment scope.
2. Changes in Investment Objectives or Strategies
Even minor shifts in how the fund is managed must be disclosed. This could include changes in the types of assets the fund can invest in or how the manager approaches market opportunities.

This Supplemental Prospectus includes amendments to the investment objective notes for one of our funds—ensuring investors are fully aware of how their money will be managed moving forward.
3. Benchmark Adjustments
Benchmarks are essential because they serve as reference points to measure a fund’s performance. When a fund changes its benchmark, it affects how returns are interpreted.

In the most recent supplement, the benchmark for the Hong Leong Dividend Fund was updated, offering greater clarity on how performance is measured against the market.
4. Distribution Policy Updates
Distribution policy outlines how and when the fund pays income to investors. Changes to this policy—such as payout frequency or reinvestment options—can directly impact your returns.

Our recent Supplemental Prospectus highlighted an adjustment in the distribution policy for one of our income-generating funds. These updates help investors anticipate changes in their income stream.
5. Updates on Fees, Charges, or Terms
Investing comes with a cost—and when these change, you deserve full transparency. The Supplemental Prospectus will outline any adjustments to:
· Sales charges
· Management fees
· Trustee fees
· Other operational terms

In the latest document, the section on maximum fees and charges was updated, replacing the previous version with clearer details. This transparency ensures investors have access to the most current information and are never caught off guard.
